DEPRESSION - accept or deny it?


So, firstly I'd like to mention that I have personally suffered with depression, temporarily, after a bad car accident and years of chronic pain and surgery. For two years I was medicated. Since then I have 'down' days.  Do you want to know what helps me get through it?


No matter who you are, you will have down days.
Some worse than others.
Granted, some people's down days are way worse than mine. Some people wake up wanting to die, feeling that it's the only way to cope/release others from the responsibility of caring for them/ease the pain they feel at life. They can't help these thoughts. It's like they're built in to the psyche. Hard for the rest of us to understand I guess. Some people just feel down, low, blue and don't know why.

Down days happen. Accept it. Have the frame of mind that it will pass. It will recede a little, be less intense. You will feel better.

Take suicidal thoughts seriously
I've experienced suicide ideation. It was rather weird. As a result of a long period of incredible stress and anxiety I calmly thought of what it would be like to just let go of the steering wheel, crash into that tree and let life slow down for a bit. Until I realised I would probably be dead, or badly brain damaged and in a LOT of pain. Not to mention the terror and helplessness my family would feel. Nevertheless, my doctor took it seriously and we took steps to fix that.

Denying it doesn't help
If you deny that you are depressed or feeling suicidal you're not helping yourself by keeping it inside. Help is out there. But you must speak up. People don't always notice you're struggling. You may not realise this, but you're probably pretty good at hiding your inner turmoil. You joke around or you just don't engage much anyway. How will those around you know? It's up to you to tell them. Somehow. Accept that this has become a problem you need help with. There is no shame in being human. We all suffer in some way. Anyone who says they are never unhappy or have negative thoughts is a liar. No one has the perfect life either, so why do you strive for something that's impossible to attain? Speak UP!

Don't reject this out of hand. Your doctor is the first port of call. Before you go trotting off to yet another psychologist, have blood tests done. They can reveal a great deal about what is going on inside your body that you may be able to change. Hormones run all body systems. Sometimes they get out of whack. Some nutrients may not be absorbed adequately and have side effects of causing depression. But you will never know if these secrets remain locked inside your body. Your GP will organise a wide range of tests based upon your age and gender. Certainly helped me to feel normal again!

There could be a physical reason
 Depression comes in all flavours. It's unique as the individual who suffers with it, but there are some classic indicators and physical imbalances that can be addressed. Take action! Don't just let it was roll over you, stealing another day of your life.

Fight depression with SOIL!

Yes, I realise this sounds like complete lunacy!
But stay with me - microbes, Microbacterium Vaccae, found in ordinary soil have been studied and the results show that they actually stimulate the human brain to produce more Serotonin, a natural calming hormone. Getting your hands dirty makes you calmer. Who knows? Maybe you can throw awake your Prozac just by growing your own vegies and herbs or even some colourful flowers/bushes.

Modern living and dirt
If you live in an apartment, you don't have to miss out. Use whatever space you have. Make sure it's garden SOIL, not potting mix. You can buy it from nurseries and hardware stores.

Why bother?
The act of tending to a living thing is in itself soothing. It takes your mind off your troubles. Let the microbes in the soil take care of the rest! You can also find out about local community gardens and get involved that way.

Turning Your LIfe Around, kicking depression - where do you start?

What's up?
So, your life sucks. You wake up feeling trapped, with nowhere to go while a secret hope hides inside you. You want more. You want to be happy, have a good job, be more active, have good friends. Other people seem to be able to get it together, so why can't you?

Be Curious - Begin with you
The first step to any journey begins with looking where you are currently standing. Before you even think about the direction you're going, you need to figure out where you stand. So much misery in our lives comes from confusion about who we are. In my teaching work with kids, particularly the teenagers, I observe how they are coping with their lives by asking them how much they know about themselves. Usually the reply is a shrug and 'I dunno.'

So here's something you can do in the next five minutes.

Once you finish the test you will be given a 4 letter result, such as ENFJ, ISTJ or ENTP. There are four groups of 16 types. Then, click on the Keirsey website to find out more about your personality type. Each one has a description and offers more information on how you function at work, within groups, what sorts of things stress you out, what you find comforting etc. So helpful!

So, how can you use this information?
Its all about how you function within your world - how you relate to others, how you understand what is going on around you, how you react when things go wrong, or when things are going well, how you encourage others, what sort of people you are attracted to as friends and partners, how you fit in your own family etc.

Once you understand yourself better, your tendencies, your reactions, you can begin to see what sort of work would suit you, why certain types of people annoy or repel you and THEN you can begin to see how to change your situation.

It's not about pointing the finger and saying you're hopeless and unlikeable. It's about empowering yourself to make better choices. What sorts of things interest you? Where would you find people with similar interests? what issues have dominated your family life that you would like to change? How did your past influence the person you have become today?

It takes courage to change
Yes, it does. There's no use in denying this fact. But hey, if you are more aware of how you feel about stuff, how you react in situations, you can make better choices for your life. No matter which Jungian group you are, there are thousands of others just like you in that group, around the world! You are not alone. Connecting with some of them will help you feel more comfortable and perhaps give you ideas for how to change.

Find your tribe
Take the steps slowly. Focus on one thing you'd like to do, ie: take up a new hobby, such as a cooking class at community college night school, (I did languages, writing and cooking for years before I became a writer). It's so much fin being around other people like yourself!

Share what you know
Don't be scared to tell others on facebook what you are discovering about yourself. So many people are searching for this information. So many people are interested in changing their circumstances, but like you, don't quite know where to start. By helping them you are helping yourself on your journey.

Be true to yourself. Stop trying to fit in with people who aren't like you! If noisy nightclubs are not your thing - stop going! If reading is your thing - join a book club! If sport is your thing - join a local team! If helping kids is your thing - help out with local scouts or get involved in your child's school.

Seeing danger - How you think affects how you feel

Are your thoughts making you unhappy?
When someone says, "I need to talk to you." - do you think the worst? Do you tend to notice angry or sad faces more than happy ones? It could be that you've developed hyper-vigilance. This means that your attention is captured by possible threats in your environment. It is important to notice what may be harmful to you, for your own safety, but the persistent focus on possible threat or perceived negative attitudes towards you can lead to depression.

What studies show
In studies on people with and without depression, it was found that those who tended to suffer with this debilitating problem tend to have persistent negative thoughts in their head. Interpretation Bias and Depressive Symptoms And this article: Not all emotions are created equal They also tended to interpret what other people say and do as negative towards themselves. For instance, if someone appears to ignore your comment, you might think, "He/she hates me." or "Well, they're obviously not interested in anything I have to say," or "Why is it every time I go to say something, no one is interested?" or even, "What is wrong with my opinion?" There may even be a tendency to catastrophise: "What's wrong? What have I done wrong? There's something bad going on here...." and, more troubling, is the possibility of these thoughts - "What's wrong with me? Why aren't I good enough?"

Because our negative "script" (persistent internal thoughts) can cause us to misinterpret others' intentions, we could then react negatively, when this is not appropriate or warranted. As a result, our relationships are affected. We walk around thinking people are against us. Our world becomes a dark place.

So what can we do to change this?

Changing thought habits
The human brain is such an amazing organ. It is constantly changing, learning, adapting and for this reason we can actually alter our thought processes to create a more positive 'script'. One way is to try and think from the perspective of others, what they might be going through or that perhaps what we think is happening might not be the case at all. For instance, the person who appears to be ignoring you might:
a) have a hearing difficulty
b) be preoccupied with their thoughts
c) be suffering or unhappy today and not tuned in
d) thought you were talking to someone else
e) be struggling to keep their head together and just can't talk to anyone today

There's lots of possibilities here. If you've developed a habit of thinking negatively and making negative assumptions, you might not be aware of it. I'm going to be absolutely blunt now - the truth is, most people don't go around thinking up ways to hurt you. They have their own problems to deal with. It's not actually about you at all. You're not that important to them. We have to stop assuming that just because we are the most important person in our life, that others feel the same way.

Who is OK?
The theory of Transactional Analysis, more particularly Eric Berne's theories, try to help us understand that our state of mind influences our thoughts and actions. Berne described 4 assumptions:
1. I'm OK and you're OK.
2. I'm OK and you're not OK
3. I"m not OK and you are OK
4. I'm not OK and you're not OK

Can you see how these thoughts could change your interpretations?

Keeping it real
That's not to say we throw out every instinctive reaction. We are primarily social creatures who want to interact positively with others, but there are situations where the other person really is angry or that things could get ugly any second. And we need to take action to avoid trouble. The trick is to interpret each situation accurately. If you're used to interpreting a threat where it might not exist, you will overreact. It's much more healthy to give people the benefit of the doubt. If you're unsure what was meant, ASK! Get more information. Don't assume. And above all, be prepared to forgive. It might pay also to reacquaint yourself with what the full range of human emotions actually looks like, so that you can interpret them better.

Why technology can't replace human relationships

The human race is devolving. Its easier to interact using technology than to engage in meaningful relationships where you look the person in the eye, smell their fear, feel their anger or see their love. Its cowardice and it demeans us. Are we so afraid to feel pain that we've shut off the avenues to joy as well?

So much of life's richness comes from dealing with the present, tackling difficulties, pushing through fears and allowing people into our hearts. A virtual hug is a sentiment only. Feeling someone's arms around you is a tactile experience, reality, fulfilling something deep inside the human psyche that cannot be replicated or synthesised.

We were made to be herd animals - a pack, for support and safety, shared joys and fun. When we withdraw physically from our own, we deprive ourselves of what we need, at the deepest level.

Conversely, when all our senses are engaged we are truly in the moment, truly living. Sweating as you tackle that mountain/climbing wall, feeling the water surround your body as you glide through, tasting the wind as you ride a bicycle down a steep road, watching your child play...

There is no substitute for what you experience physically, mentally and spiritually by actually being in the moment.

Why keeping a diary is good for the soul
Ever had one of those days when you just wanted to crawl back under the covers and sleep it off? Ever had a problem you thought NO ONE would understand? Well, guess what? You have at least one friend in the world - your diary. Jotting down your feelings can be a powerful way to unleash your frustrations, your passions, your creativity, your grief, your anger, your joy. It's the one time you're completely honest, because you're talking to... yourself. There's no judgement. There's no blame. It's just you and your innermost thoughts.

When is a diary a negative thing?
Of course, you might think that dumping all your negative stuff in a journal is a bad thing, that it keeps you locked inside your misery. But it doesn't have to. Your diary can be a notebook of sorts, for collecting all the little bits and pieces you find which are of interest, for doodling, sketching and glueing pictures. If can be a place where you store great ideas, write down goals and dreams, spell out your passions. It's up to you. If your diary is a place you want to revisit, make it an uplifting place to be! Be kind to yourself. Search for inspirational quotes to perk you up when you're feeling blue.

ME time

Me time. It's not only advisable, it's a necessity. You must put time aside for yourself. Life can be stressful, insanely busy. The demands on your time can wear you down, cause you sleepless nights, aches and pains you didn't know you had and mood swings you don't want. It's all about winding down with some time to yourself. And you not only deserve it, you desperately need it. Plot it into your diary. Make a date with a friend to have coffee/lunch, take the time to read a good book or watch something you've been hanging out for. It's not selfish. It's sensible.
